The alleys of St. Forsinan by Ranarh The alleys of St. Forsinan by Ranarh
I wanted to paint a classical roleplaying scene. The city and the castle in the background, the rich couple on the way home, choosing the shortcut through the back alleys, and the thieves in the shadows, getting ready to pounce. Jesper Ejsing said in a workshop that he thinks in cool and warm colours, so I planned my painting like that and I think it worked fine.
"Dark alley" assignment for #Weekly-Environment.

Thanks. Architecture is sometimes daring, but these old, lived-in alleys of medieval towns were friendly enough to stand still for me to paint them ;)

My pleasure!  :)

That was indeed good of them to do.  :)

It's always preferable if buildings hold still ;)

Well, what would you use in a Fantasy RPG like Dungeons and Dragons or Pathfinder when they don't stand still?  Dispel Magic, Fireball, or just go and kick the wizard's butt?  :)

Well, you must make sure that the city wasn't built on a forgotten deity or seals the Netherworld; secondly, make sure they aren't were-houses (stocking up with garlic certainly is a good idea), thirdly, check your intoxication levels, and finally, go look if a dark spell turned the land into quicksand or something. If all come up negative, consult your Adventurer's Handbook for Dire Circumstances. I advise the revised, fourth edition - it has been spellchecked, and the chapter on tarrasques is much more thorough.

Very nice work with the lighting and attention to detail. Not to mention the color scheme is wonderful, and are those initials I see written down on that piece of the wall under the lantern to the right?

The bright entrance into the alley the shadowing corridors where all manner of questionable characters lurk. I bet they wait until the couple is further away from the main street before pouncing.

...unless that posh couple is in fact a pair of assassins, which could explain why they so confidently stride into the back alley...

I can see this as a book cover. It's just the right shape with the right level of detail, and the people, especially the thieves, could easily be characters in a story.
