Tiny tips: It's a material world by Ranarh Tiny tips: It's a material world by Ranarh
This is a more general collection of tips and hints for painting different materials. I often see young artists struggle with it, and thought that a few rules of thumb would be helpful. This is of course nowhere in-depth about painting any of the discussed materials, nothing about the colouring of metal, the exact behaviour of fabric etc. and other things that are often asked.

You'll find the whole Tiny Tips Collection, plus some full-grown walkthroughs in my tutorial section. Check out my blog and website for exclusive tutorials, walkthroughs, and tips.

This is incredibly useful! In my aim to move into realistic painting I ned all the help I can get, it's always frustrating when you can see really good textures but can't say why or how they work. Thank you for the breakdown :)

You are welcome.

I've also found that painting with sharp edges and textured brushes often gives pretty good results.

Wonderful - very enlightening! (And though they are only pieces, the cut outs really look stunning to prove the point!)
